What would I-2109 do?
This measure would create a massive tax break for multi-millionaires, at the expense of our schools and our kids.
This measure would give just a handful of mega-millionaires and billionaires a tax break - about 4,000 people. Last year, 99.8% of us did not pay this tax yet it raised $890 million for schools, affordable childcare, and early learning. It only applies to million dollar stock sales - all real estate, retirement accounts, farms and small family businesses are exempt.
Funding from the capital gains tax is dedicated to childcare, public education, and early learning, meaning working and middle-class families and their children across Washington State benefit from this important revenue stream. Funding for our schools, pre-schools, and childcare facilities, would be cut if this measure passes. Join respected organizations like Children’s Alliance, Moms Rising, Save the Children, and the Washington Education Association in voting no on I-2109.
Right-wing Republican mega-donor Brian Heywood, who spent millions to qualify the repeal for the ballot, is one of the very few ultra-wealthy people in Washington who would benefit from this measure passing. Is it any wonder he is pushing to have it repealed and doesn’t care what harm a repeal will do to kids and families in our state?
