More than 100 pediatricians and nurses have joined the campaign against Initiative 638, which they say would create harmful barriers for young athletes.

Washington’s ballot measure was introduced last year by Let’s Go Washington, a political action committee founded by the hedge fund manager Brian Heywood, a multimillionaire who has bankrolled many conservative initiatives. It’s widely considered to be the most restrictive of the four statewide measures, mandating that girls show proof of female anatomy through expensive genetic or hormone tests, or a genital exam. Boys are not required to undergo the same sex-verification process.

Let’s Go Washington has paid more than $22,000 to the family of a teen who frequently appears at Let’s Go Washington events and speaks to the media about I-638. 

The $2 billion Inatai Foundation just announced they are ending their relationship with WaFd. “After reviewing Public Disclosure Commission filings, Inatai learned that our banking partner WaFd contributed $25,000 to the campaign backing initiatives that would make schools less safe for all Washington students—particularly queer, trans, and girl youth. …We believe our values should show up everywhere, not just in our grantmaking. They should guide who we contract with and who we do business with. And we will continue to use every tool available to us to help build a more just and equitable Washington.”
